> I am looking at buying RADPHP XE and it seems that the forums are not going to be very helpful for working out small technical issues.... so i have a question... after I buy, is the customer service very good? If I am having trouble figuring out the syntax for something IDE related, and I contact support, are they quick to respond and helpful with their answers or is the customer service email a big black hole?

We offer different levels of support and you should think about what
your needs are.

For free, we offer install and registration assistance. To create a
install or registration case, go to http://support.embarcadero.com and
click the create a case button. If you send email to customer service
you are pretty much doing the same thing. You'll generally get a slower
response though.

For assistance with syntax you'll need some sort of support contract.
The best deal is to purchase support and maintenance when you purchase
your product. It includes 3 support cases and all new updates for the
next year.

We also offer annual support contracts with unlimited calls if you find
your needs are higher. For details see http://support.embarcadero.com/annual

You can get a single support incident for $300. For details see:
http://support.embarcadero.com/incident I cannot imagine how this could
be a value for this sort of question, but it is an option.

Finally, QADRAM has support forums as well. They may be found at
http://www.qadram.com/vcl4php/forums/

The interaction with Firebird is pretty well documented.
The Delphi approach is nice, drop something on the form and it will work.
However as stated before it's not always that easy. But hopefully the vcl
will be better supported now.

One of my first mistakes was the Delphi approach:

myform := tform.create(application);
myform.showmodal;
myform.free;

This approach will not work in php. Just an example. Don't let you be
mislead. I'm pleased that the product is no longer called Delphi for PHP.

cheers,
> Thanks Albert for taking this trouble.
>
> I am in no pressing hurry so I will also see the reation from more
> experience PHP coders.
>
> The attraction to me is both the perceived Delphi approach and hopefully
> easy interaction with Firebird databases.
>> If you are a novice PHP programmer than don't think that Delphi for PHP
>> works like Delphi. The products look very similar, but using php is
>> completely different. And using it with D4PHP gives you an even higer
>> learning curve. You need to know the vcl, which is in no way similar than
>> what you are used to.
>> Version 1 was loaded with bugs and the ide very unstable. Version 2 was
>> better, bot not good. Look at the (open source) vcl, no updates for ages.
>> This part has very nasty bugs which are not solved by Emb. (because it is
>> open-source?) But then again, if the community uses it there would be
>> updates? I know that there are a few people who create apps, but we found
>> that the products created with D4PHP where not ready for production
>> sites.
>> It's a matter of opinion, yes, but you should read the notes in the
>> newsgroups or forum. There's a lot written about this subject and I don't
>> want to 'nag' here. But as a customer we where disappointed by the first
>> two
>> editions and I feel that Emb. should make a gesture to the old
>> customers.The
>> V3 product is a complete rewrite which means that Emb is aware of the
>> flaws
>> of version 1 and 2.
>>
>> I don't want to discourage you because of this, version 3 might be
>> perfect.
>> But we sure will not be an early adopter and will wait for the reactions.
>> The product has a lot potential because of the ease of creating forms,
>> but
>> on the other hand we are years from the first edition and with the
>> popular
>> smarty and a sufficient webeditor you can do a lot.
>>
>> Generally I advise you to use trial versions of all the products and then
>> decide. Expect a steep learning curve as the PHP books don't know of the
>> phpvcl, but do know about open-source libraries out there like smarty,
>> nusoap, pdf etc. So you will hardly find docs about the vcl for PHP. And
>> your applications will completely be dependent by this
>>
>> There are two alternative products to view imho: PhpEd of NuSphere (the
>> php
>> debugger is based upon the freeware version of the NuSphere product) and
>> Zend Studio (which does a lot in the php world). Try the products and
>> make
>> your decision then.
>>>> both version 1 and 2 I'm pretty disappointed about D4PHP and now I'm
licensing is similar to ours.
>> But I
>> still don't have the guts to create a production system with it. ...
>> But before creating production apps I need to be sure that the product
>> is fully maintained.
>>
>
> Don't use that as an excuse, it works fine once you understand it. And
> as far as future changes - they normally break old programs anyway. I'm
> still using Delphi 6 on a lot of programs on the windows side.
>
> To upgrade apps that I created with v1 of d4php I would have to change
> a lot of things because of defaults they changed when v2 came out. So I
> use d4php.v1 for some and v2 for newer stuff. For the most part the VCL
> itself didn't change much, just the IDE got better, and for the actual
> programming part that is done within the VCL - the IDE just makes it
> easy to use.
